Drunk Man Dies After Trying To Rescue Girlfriend's Shoes

A DRUNKEN man died on April 16 after jumping into docks to rescue his girlfriend’s shoes.

The 21-year-old, who has not been named, dived into the water at Goole, East Yorkshire, at about 1am.

The Coastguard said the man and his girlfriend had been drinking heavily on a night out. The woman alerted police that her boyfriend had jumped into the docks and a sea and air search was launched immediately.

A rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield was scrambled, as well as the Hull Coastguard and ambulance and fire crews.

Rescuers used an infrared camera to try to find the man but at 4.40am police divers recovered the man’s body.

Coastguard watch officer Mike Puplett said alcohol and swimming were a lethal combination.

"This is a very sad outcome, and once again it appears that alcohol has
played a part in this young man’s demise," he said.
